Legal Internships for Fall Semester 2020

Legal Internships for Fall Semester 2020

PCYP is accepting applications from law students seeking legal internships for the Fall of 2020.  PCYP’s internship program provides interns with unique exposure to a wide-variety of cases, under careful and supportive supervision. Interns work closely with staff attorneys and clients on a range of cases, including name changes and updating identity documents, affirmative and defensive immigration applications (primarily Special Immigrant Juvenile, Asylum, U and T visas), public assistance advocacy, and prisoner’s rights.

Based on interns’ interests and programmatic needs, potential work for the summer could include:

  • Staffing weekly legal clinics at homeless drop-in centers;
  • Working with clients to develop affidavits to support their immigration applications;
  • Representing clients in Name Change Court under our student practice order;
  • Conducting direct examination of a client seeking special immigrant juvenile status in Family Court;
  • Preparing immigration applications;
  • Representing clients in administrative hearings regarding their food stamps and/or public assistance;
  • Assisting clients to update their name and gender marker on identity documents;
  • Advocating for incarcerated clients to received appropriate medical care or challenge conditions of their confinement;
  • Helping clients to navigate the criminal justice system, including obtaining criminal histories and advocating with public defenders to obtain resolutions that do not impact a client’s immigration status, and;
  • Research projects, as needed.
  • Applicants should have excellent writing, research, and interpersonal skills and an awareness of the systemic barriers facing our diverse client and constituent populations. Applicants who speak additional languages other than English are preferred.

To apply:

Please submit cover letter and resume to Lee Strock at Applications accepted on a rolling basis until positions filled, but we encourage you to apply early. Please note that applicants must seek outside funding from their law schools or other funders. We are happy to support these efforts.

The PCYP is an Equal Opportunity Employer and strongly encourages women, people of color, people who identify as transgender or gender-non conforming, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ applicants, immigrants, and formerly incarcerated persons to apply.
